Random notes around the NFC East: Amerson’s amnesia, Chip chippy with fans, Giants TEs, and stealing players from NFCE teams

Redskins

• Rich Tandler put up a piece on David Amerson. Jim Haslett thinks that Amerson’s first game against Tennessee ruined him for a few games. Amerson truly was brutal in the Tennessee game. His lowlights:

When I took a deep look at Amerson, I thought that his coverage lapses were the smaller problem:

The double moves, for me, are the smaller issue. That can be fixed. It was the lack of effort and the total unwillingness to tackle that is more alarming, and a much harder fix. The talent is clearly there, but Amerson is going to have to decide if he wants to play football at a high level. If he does, he should be a good pro. If not, he’ll be out of the league very quickly.

Eagles

• I just happened to find this video of Chip Kelly yelling at some fans while being interviewed by Erin Andrews:

• I did a post on Nick Foles’ rookie season, and Tommy piggy-backed off of it.

Cowboys

• My buddy Lars did a “If you could have one player from each NFC East team” post. He did it, of course, from the perspective of the Cowboys. I figured I’d shop for groceries for each of the 4 teams:

If I were the Cowboys…

Redskins: RG3. I’ll save you the suspense for the Redskins. RG3 is going to be the pick for every team.

Eagles: Fletcher Cox is going to be a star, and the Cowboys need to get younger and better along their interior DL.

Giants: Wow, really tough call here. A couple weeks ago, Jason Pierre-Paul would have been a no-brainer, but that back injury of his really concerns me. Give me Will Beatty for the Cowboys.

If I were the Redskins…

Cowboys: Dez Bryant. DeMarcus Ware is tempting, but he’s aging and I’m not so sure the Redskins are that close to contending for a Super Bowl. Give me a top 10 WR to pair with RG3. Morris Claiborne is also intriguing, but I don’t know if he’s going to be really good or not yet. I know for sure that Dez Bryant is.

Eagles: Fletcher Cox. Again, stud in the making, and the Skins could use a difference maker at DE.

Giants: Beatty. They complete their OL.

If I were the Eagles…

I’d take any of the division’s three QBs in a heartbeat.

If I were the Giants…

Cowboys: DeMarcus Ware. Giants are suddenly thin in the pass rush department, and Ware is kinda good.

Eagles: Yeah, still Fletcher Cox.

Redskins: RG3. Can’t pass him up.

Giants

• TE coach Mike Pope talked about the TEs. Good stuff. Here’s what he said about newly acquired Brandon Myers:

“I think at the Raiders he was more of an intermediate receiver,” Pope said. “And now our passing game does allow the tight end to get more vertically down the field -– flag routes, double seam routes, post routes. And he appears to have the skills to get those balls. He has a little bit of a jet that can accelerate and go get a ball that is a little deeper. You may not think he is going to reach it, but he has that little bit. So we are very interested to see him in pads.”

Myers is going to be a massive upgrade over Martellus Bennett, in my opinion.

  21. With the Redskins making a big move to get their franchise QB, Dallas will be wise to make sure they draft defenders that can help keep this type of QB in check.

    Cowboys fan here

Taking Trent Williams from the Redskins to shore up the o-line, JPP from the Giants because he’s still their best player, and Evan Mathis from the Eagles to give Romo all day in the pocket.

  60. Rachel Oneal says:

» NFC Final Word: East | West | North | South » AFC: East | West | North | South Five nuggets of knowledge about Week 3: This hard land: The Dallas Cowboys host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, and historically that is good news for Dallas. The Cowboys are 10-3 all time against the Bucs, which is their second-best record against any opponent. (They’re 8-1 against the Carolina Panthers ). They have been especially tough against Tampa Bay at home, going 7-1 against the Bucs in Texas and winning by an average of 8.4 points per game. Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is 3-0 with a 70.9 completion percentage, 11 touchdowns and no interceptions in his career against Tampa Bay. Of course, all of those stats were compiled back when you could take the end-of-game kneel-down for granted against the Bucs. All that stuff is out the window now that they bring that Rutgers-style grit and toughness to the final seconds.

  61. skinsaneasylum says:

For the Skins, I would snag the following NFCE opponents:

NYG: Hakeem Nicks….having Nicks and Pierre lining up wide with Robert and Alf in the backfield as well as new weapons Jordan Reed and also getting Fred Davis healthy……WOW. Unfair.

Dallas: Sean Lee. I would normally say Dez, but I think he is a terrible human being so I went with Nicks over Dez. Also, I stayed away from Dez so I could go with Lee. A beast to replace London and pair with Perry Riley. Sick LB corps of Orakpo, Kerrigan, Riley, Lee….again, Unfair.

Philly: I think I really like Lane Johnson. Athletic and would be a great bookend on the right side with Trent Williams on the left.

Yikes….these would make the Skins absolutely SCARY!

  62. RedskinsFan says:

You’d have a hard time taking Lorenzo Alexander from the Redskins since he’s an Arizona Cardinal now (only significant player lost by the Redskins this offseason, from retirement/FA or release).

Just saying. And as for RG3/JPP…. JPP just got injured, and could miss the entire season. RG3, even “just on schedule” would be playing by the end of the season. By all accounts, RG3 is ahead of schedule (Adrien Peterson ahead of schedule, if you will), and will start early, if not the first game itself.

  63. mandmeisterx says:

Depends if we’re talking long term, or this season.

    This season:

    WAS: Trent Williams
    PHI: Evan Mathis
    NYG: JPP

    Long term:

    WAS: RGIII
    PHI: Fletcher Cox
    NYG: Will Beatty

    1. mandmeisterx says:

Scratch that. I’m going with David Wilson for this year’s Giants pick.

  64. talon talent says:

I asked my Cowwhores friend and VaGiants friend who’d they take.
Cowwhores: Philly-LeSean McCoy, Was- Brian Orakpo, NY-Hakeem Nicks.
VaGiants: Was – RG3, Dal- Dez Bryant, Phi- Nobody ( he’s a big Philly hater and obviously an idiot) I also asked my Deadskins fan: Dal- Claiborne, NY- Victor Cruz, Phi- Lane Johnson. For my take: NY- JPP, Dal- Claiborne, Was – RG3.

  65. TylerD says:

Players I would take on the Giants

    Cowboys – Jason Witten
Redskins – Give me Barry back
Eagles – Trent Cole, or Mathis

    1. Gary says:

If you’re taking a d-lineman from the Eagles, I think it’d be a huge mistake to take Cole over Cox.

  66. Thiergow says:

You can actually pass RGIII if you were the Giants. You can’t on one hand pass on JPP because of his back surgery and other hand forget about RGIII’s knee injury last year.
Plus it’s not like the Giants would need an upgrade at QB. Eli had a down year in comparison to 2011 because of a devastated WR corp and OL would couldn’t pass protect but it’s still was a pretty good year (hell he had a better year than this year Super Bowl MVP).
Taking a DL/pass rusher from the Redskins would actually have more added value.

    1. Thiergow says:

Sorry for the double comment. Had an error message the first time so I wrote it again and got the same message again only to see later that both comments had successfully been posted :/

  67. Thiergow says:

For the Giants: “Redskins: RG3. Can’t pass him up.”
Actually you can pass him up if you were the Giants because they have Eli Manning. Even without the knee problem, having RGIII wouldn’t add value to the team. He’s certainly a weapon but he’ll get injured more often than Eli.
So the Redskins I would pick if I were the Giants would be Carriker, Cofield or Orakpo. Like you said when picking Ware, the Giants need help on the DL. Alfred Morris could be an option but I believe his success is mainly due to RGIII than his own talent (not that he doesn’t have talent but Morris wouldn’t be as dangerous without a double threat QB).

    1. poolboy87 says:

If you truly would pick Adam Carriker over RG3…

Then you should find a street corner and make a sign that reads:

      “I make poor decisions…
      Point and laugh at me”

      1. Thiergow says:

Like I said, if we are going to take into account JPP’s surgery then we should also consider the fact that RGIII is coming back from a knee injury. I forgot about Carriker’s and Orakpo injuries but my point it still valid: I’d take a healthy Redskins DL (ie. Cofield) over RGIII who’s coming back from a knee injury.

  68. What Jimmy? All 3 NFC QBs for the Eagles – BOOOOO – if your fantasy shopping spree was possible we would never take all 3 of those guys.

First off – I don’t want anything to do with Tony Romo, too old and prone to throwing ints at the end of games…Philly would never forgive him for that.

Eli, sure sure – I have a much harder time rejecting that QB choice, even though he is also aging – at least he is clutch. He would be the one QB I would take from our rivals.

As for RG3 – not until I see him play football again. You just passed on JPP as the Cowboys due to a back injury. So what, RG3′s total knee rebuild is not a concern? I would not touch that one-year wonder-cripple. Give me Trent Williams anyday, and if you think we already have too many OLs to take another starting LT, then take the other probowler, Lorenzo Alexander…hell, if you like old tired badasses like Eli then why not London Fletcher?

PS – great article – thanks for all the thoughts…

    1. oh – my Cowboys player of choice would be Dez I guess, if I have to take one of those bastards – I also love Lee, but injuries worry me of course and I am actually ok with our 2 interior LBs – the only other Cowboy I love and respect is Jason Witten, but as you have written – is anyone really scared of Witten anymore?

    2. Right. I was operating under the “I only get one player” thing. I certainly wouldn’t take 3 QBs. If I get the keep three guys for the Eagles, I’d go RG3, Ware, and shit… I guess JPP? The Giants don;t really have any players I’d be salivating over.

      1. I think getting Prince would fill a need with a quality young player.

        1. Makes sense, but I think that if you’re going to steal one guy from a team, you want to do better than Prince Amukamara.

    3. skinsaneasylum says:

Lorenzo Alexander is no longer on the Skins. The Cardinals paid him bigger money than DC could due to Mara’s cap penalty on them.

You seem to be in denial if you believe Robert Griffin III is a “one-year wonder-cripple”….thats cute.

      1. you call it denial – I call it hope…he is a truly beastly player, but Shanny ground his legs off…but you ar totally correct if you think I am biased towards hoping he will never be the same – that kid can play

        1. I liked the ring of “one-year wonder-cripple” too…

  69. Back injury or not, JPP all the way.

    1. brisulph says:

Backs are a helluva thing though… he could be fine, or his career could be about 25% of what it could have been.

      1. MannaFromKevin says:

Very true. Back issues never seem to go away. The Eagles’ Shawn Andrews and Tra Thomas struggled with back issues that they just didn’t seem to be able to shake. For Andrews it contributed to the end of his career (along with whatever else was going on with him). Tra had a long career and didn’t miss a ton of games, but ever since he messed up his back in 2005 (which required surgery), he continued to have recurring back spasms the remainder of his career and missed occasional games and/or couldn’t practice.
