Let’s play an RG3 “what if” game

I’m curious where Redskins fans’ heads are at on this one. Last season, in Week 16, the Eagles were about to run the 15th play of a drive that started at their own 15. It was a quick slant to Evan Moore, which was open. If Moore makes the catch, he’s going to score:

Evan Moore 1

But in typical 2012 Eagles fashion, Moore dropped it:

Evan Moore 2

The Redskins escaped with a 27-20 win.

Let’s say just for fun that Moore makes the catch, and with nothing to lose, the Eagles go for two against a tired defense, get it, and win. The Giants beat the Ravens, the Redskins don’t win the division, they don’t go to the playoffs, and fans of the Eagles, Cowboys, and Giants continue to bust on the Skins for being the division losers of the last two decades.

But…

The wildcard game disaster against the Seahawks never happens. Richard Sherman never pisses off Skins fans far and wide, and most importantly, RG3 never tears his ACL.

So which outcome, after the fact, would you prefer?

  78. [...] Jimmy Bama came up with a pretty brilliant “What if” scenario for Skins fans to ponder. [...]

  79. 91mr2t says:

Wow, its truly amazing how hard of a time people are having grasping the concept of the scenario u presented. I was actually quite interested to see how skins fans would respond but instead the majority lash out at Jimmy for asking what if.

    1. skinsaneasylum says:

The concept is fairly intriguing. I voted to keep things the way they were as I also believe he will make a full recovery and would have required LCL surgery this off season no matter what following the Ngata injury. The ACL was not completely torn when Andrews went in, but he decided to repair it fully anyway. Medicine and surgical procedures, especially for knee reconstruction, has made some major advancements in the past few years alone. Also, you are able to use your own stem cells to aid in the recovery (not an option even 5 years ago).

The “lashing” out shoudl be expected when he combines a well though out hypothetical with dripping Eagles homerism. But page views are page views, right?

      1. Lol, “page views.”

  80. rex says:

I’m happy the skins made the playoffs since it means that ShanaHack remains coach. He’s like a sleeper agent for the rest of the division. I actually feel badly for RG3 being drafter by a team with the worst possible coach for developing a young QB.

    1. skinsaneasylum says:

Hahaha…let me guess, you are Rex Grossman and you are pissed Robert took your job?

I’d say Robert developed well, so go on and keep hating. Jay Cutler (while an asshole) does alright for himself too.

  81. Hokieshibe says:

Holy cow! So you’re telling me an Eagles team missing 4 or 5 major contributors (Vick doesn’t count – he was benched, not hurt) almost beat another team missing several major contributors (Orakpo, Meriweather, Fred Davis, RGIII’s knee), but then failed to do so?! Stop the presses!

    1. skinsaneasylum says:

With an injured RG3, no less.

    2. Gary says:

I don’t think you understand the question/meaning of the post.

      1. Hokieshibe says:

I completely understand the point. The point I’m trying to make is that he picked this game to play what-if on, even though it means he had to change another game (Giants-Baltimore) just to make it work. Why not change some bounces against the giants, or the cowboys in the last game if you want to just play this or that? Because he wanted to talk up the Eagles and point out how close they came to having a chance to win the game on a 2-point conversion attempt (which, given the Eagles redzone performance the last decade, I wouldn’t say was a gimmie either)

        1. J.J. says:

          Hokie,

Nope – you don’t understand. The Eagles angle is just a set up to the question, “Would you prefer (a) Skins miss playoffs & RG3 isn’t injured or (b) Skins make playoffs but RG3′s knee explodes?”

Jimmy could have asked it in a more straightforward way (so more Skins fans would understand), but the lead-in makes it more compelling.

  82. HogHunter says:

Can we do what if Dan Snyder never bought the Redskins next?

  83. TylerD says:

Well if we are doing what if’s we might as well go back to what if Cleveland wasn’t such a terrible organization and had been able to complete the trade with the Rams first. No RGIII Skins are still the cellar dwellers Happy Giants, Eagles and Cowboys fans.

  84. NYG_Slater says:

interesting. Also to note, it might have been easier to just change the RG3 fumble touchdown versus the giants, to a giants recovery. Because ya, giants “beating the ravens” is a tough hypothetical pill to swallow.

Regardless, I’d probably play it cautious and keep RG3 healthy- screw the playoffs in his rookie year. Keep him healthy, grow as a team and keep playoff aspirations alive for the next 10+ years.

Can he recover from 2 surgeries on the same knee? Sure, hopefully. How bout 3? uh….rather not find out. All it may take is just take one more bad hit, a misstep, a faulty “roll-a-bout” for RG3′s future to be much less bright. It wont be dark, as he could still develop as a superior pocket QB with elusiveness…But, clearly, his speed at QB is very special. If that were taken, Not only would I feel bad for him, I’d actually (cant believe im typing this) feel bad for the redskins faithful. How long have they been waiting for a QB? Now they have one, with game changing speed. (southpark voice) “Aaaaaand it’s gone”.

Is a playoff appearance worth it? I’d rather keep my young promising QB away from the knife, keep that “extra life” in my back pocket, and pray i’d never have to use it. A rookie year is way too early to start having a second knee surgery. But I’m a giants fan, so the value I place on a playoff appearance might not be equivalent compared to a redskins fan.

  85. Dan in Philly says:

What if RG3 were born female? What rippling effect on the space time continuum would that have had?

    1. skinsaneasylum says:

I think she would just go on to set records at Baylor, be the first woman to win a Heisman trophy, and then be the first girl to start in the NFL at any position.

      1. Mark says:

        And be the first lesbian.

Sorry, someone had to say it.

  86. Hokieshibe says:

Here’s a scenario that doesn’t require changing the outcomes of 2 games (one of which was a 33-14 beatdown): What if the replacement refs were competent, and Green Bay got the win over Seattle? Seattle never goes to the playoffs, skins play Chicago, RGIII never reinjures his knee on a Bruce Irvin blitz…

I’m still not sure what the point of this excercize is. To prove the Eagles almost beat the Redskins?

    1. It’s playoffs and RG3′s injury or no playoffs and a healthy RG3. Is it that difficult to grasp? My style is rarely subtle. If I want to say the Eagles almost beat the Redskins, I’ll just say it.

In fact, if it’ll make you feel better I’ll just say it right now:

The Eagles almost beat the Redskins, even though they had absolutely nothing to play for and were playing without 6 offensive starters, including Michael Vick, Jason Peters, Todd Herremans, Jason Kelce, and DeSean Jackson.

      There.

      1. HogHunter says:

Come on Jimmy, we already established that Vick was healthy and still not being played in that game in the other post.

      2. skinsaneasylum says:

Jimmy “Guys! We almost beat the Redskins! We are so close!! Keep the faith”…

        Nice loser talk, Jimmy.

        1. I’ve been bullish on the Skins for over a year, but as noted in the comment section of a recent Skins post that was actually mildly negative toward the Skins (unlike this one)…

I forgot how ridiculously sensitive their fanbase can be. Holy hell.

    2. mjoedgaard says:

But you still play on that crappy field the Redskins got.

      1. HogHunter says:

The field was redone over the last month. New grass was put down last week.

  87. Dez Bryant's Probation Officer says:

    Ligaments are overrated.

  88. Mitchell says:

I think if you’re a redskins fan and RG3 never tears his ACL both he and Shanahan dnt learn a lesson about not running RG3 to much. Thus opening RG3 to injury this season and just prolonging the inevitable. Migt as well learn it early while he is still young and can heal quickly.

    1. WeGotLinemen says:

The plays where he got injured, against the Ravens and Atlanta both came on broken pass plays, when Griffin was scrambling.

He didn’t take many big hits on planned runs.

If you compared the damage he sustained in the passing game, to that he sustain on the run option plays, the lesson would be to stop this passing lark because it was getting him killed.

The one lesson RGIII needs to learn is that it is okay to throw it away sometimes.

      1. deg0ey says:

“The one lesson RGIII needs to learn is that it is okay to throw it away sometimes.”

And the fact that Vick still doesn’t know this 12 years after he was drafted gives me a little hope that maybe RG3 won’t terrorize the East quite as much as we all expect.

        1. skinsaneasylum says:

Yet Vick is a convicted fellon while Robert graduated a semester early and started working towards a Master’s degree…..

  89. WeGotLinemen says:

I tend to think that Griffin was doomed to surgery as soon as he took that hit in the Raven’s game. That was when the damage was done, the play-off game was just the exclamation point.

Sure he made it back and played a couple more regular season games after, but the sort of injury he sustained in the Ravens game was never going to heal itself properly through rest alone.

Let’s say he doesn’t make the play-offs. His knee doesn’t collapse against the Seahawks. He’s going to have to have to start using that knee again at some point and I just don’t think it would ever get back to near a 100% without significant surgery.

Part of the reason he went down against the Seahawks was that he changed to a softer brace. Take the pitch out of the equation, his knee collapsed as soon as they removed the ironwork that was providing him with lateral stability.

  90. Adrian says:

Why not show the missed throw to Maclin? If Foles completes that pass, we aren’t even discussing Moore.

    1. skinsaneasylum says:

Why not talk about what the score would have looked like if RG3 was healthy, if we are playing “what if”…..oh wait, we saw that….it was 31-6…..seriously….31-6

      1. zphilly says:

Have an intelectual debate, don’t make this about eagles-skins, its about whether as a skins fan if given the choice would you prefer last years playoff berth and an injured RGIII or a healthy RGIII and no playoffs. It’s not complicated kid

        1. skinsaneasylum says:

Jimmy made this entirely about Eagles-Skins, are you joking? Would it not be a much easier “what if” scenario if he had just said “what if RG3′s fumble didn’t go for a TD against the Giants?”…..nope….he chose to go with your horrid Eagles game, predict a TD, an ensuing 2pt conversion, and a complete change of history with the Giants beating the Eagles……I’d say its pretty clear he wanted to make this about the Eagles, kid. Pay attention to what you are reading.

          1. skinsaneasylum says:

            Giants beating the Ravens*

  91. DerfDiggy says:

This is passive aggressive behavior, JimmyK…and I like it…I like it a lot..

Skins fans…take note…one division win after a couple lucky bounces(or drops) and playing teams with a litany of injuries doesn’t make you world beaters.

    1. OlSKool1972 says:

Means about the same as winning the Division multiple times but losing multiple Championship games and still never winning a Super Bowl. Eagles fans take note.

      1. A Fine Messi says:

Such sour grapes by so many of you… are we really arguing “if only we had caught that touchdown and made the 2-point conversion we coulda…” game? aren’t there, like, 15 of those plays a game? “what if we made that first down? what if they had called thaty obvious hold? what if we wouldn’t have fumbled? what if we hadn’t retaliatated and gotten a 15 yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and been pushed out of field goal range?”.

Correct me if i’m wrong, but weren’t the skins missing 4 or 5 defensive starters that game also (Carriker, Orakpo, Meriweather, D. Gomes, M. Williams, C. Griffin)?

Furthermore, if Tyree had made not made that helmet catch and/or if Brady hadn’t overthrown Welker, the Giants would not have won a Super Bowl since 1990.

        1. Dude, that is not at all the purpose here. Not even a little bit. It’s just a curiosity on whether or not you’d rather have the playoff appearance at the cost of RG3′s knee, or if you’d rather miss it. Ugh.

          1. A Fine Messi says:

why are you getting so defensive? i was responding to a post by DerfDiggy where he states, “one division win after a couple lucky bounces(or drops) and playing teams with a litany of injuries doesn’t make you world beaters.”

why unleash your frustrations out on me instead of on Derf? and what was this, then? “The Eagles almost beat the Redskins, even though they had absolutely nothing to play for and were playing without 6 offensive starters, including Michael Vick, Jason Peters, Todd Herremans, Jason Kelce, and DeSean Jackson.”

to answer your question, though… i think i would take the the division title with an RG3 injury over ending the season 8-8 and seeing the cowboys waltz into the playoffs.

  92. Brian Murphy says:

That’s not true. This game ended up not mattering since the Cowboys won that week as well. It was still going to come down to Week 17.

  93. Dez Bryant's Probation Officer says:

Don’t do this Jimmy. Take this post down, please. As an Eagle fan, “what ifs” only break my heart.
