Cowboys Failsauce

With the Cowboys on the clock at 18, they traded all the way back to 31, and only picked up a 3rd rounder in return.

And then they took C Travis Frederick.

Survey says…

That’s it. I’m not even writing anything further about it.

Looks like you’ve hit the big time, Jimmy. You always know you’ve hit a sore spot when you start seeing dicks in usernames.

    1. I’m kind of a big deal.

  2. Donald Donaldson says:

Cowboys fans are the best! Although I’m starting to believe that they are just as delusional as their GM.

  3. Dumb Ass Dallas says:

If the trend continues and Dallas goes OL in the next three drafts they will have 5 first rounders across the front, only to then watch Smith leave in FA. Then they start the process all over again

  4. DerfDiggy says:

Frederick received a 78.7 from as a grade. Much higher than Pugh and Long whom were taken at 19 and 20. The grade is also within 1.5 of Sly, Elam, and pretty much every other pick between 18 and 31. Given that Mayock’s opinion is factored in that means the rest of the analysts must have given Frederick an extremely high grade.

Gil Brandt, former Vice President of Personnel and chief scout, had Frederick mocked to 24 and 26 during the process. So this “all esteemed experts” hate Frederick is absolute bunk.

Was Frederick a reach based on pre-draft rankings? Absolutely. I think the majority of the league had him as an early to mid 2nd rounder. The same region as Justin Pugh and Kyle Long. Do pre-draft rankings mean a whole lot when you highly scout, workout, and interview five prospects whom pre-draft were rated between the first and second round? Nope. Obviously.

Dallas pre-draft had the 5 national invite prospects between their 18 and 47 picks with Cooper, Warmack, Pugh, Long, and our pick Frederick. They went in that exact order despite draftnik ratings for Pugh, Long, and Frederick putting them solidly in the second round.

Basically we don’t know as much as we like to believe we do.

    1. DerfDiggy says:

Plus his name has Fred in it… So there’s that.

But seriously…I find it very difficult to be upset here…I know you guys like to bash Jerry but this isn’t nearly the fail people make it seem.

      1. David_Does_Dallas says:

I actually liked the pick from the beginning, I didn’t like the trade though. My heart sank when we moved away from Sharriff Floyd, and I was hoping we moved up to 13 for Star. I think Frederick will be a good player for the Cowboys for a long time and I also think he instantly makes our offensive line better. We all know Tony’s biggest problems are from interior pressure and Frederick can take on even the biggest and strongest nose tackles in the league.

    2. deg0ey says:

I think you make a valid point here. As an Ohio State fan, I can tell you that I absolutely hate having to play Wisconsin and the primary reason is their interior linemen. They’re consistently good, well coached players and I don’t think you can really go wrong with drafting one.

The only real criticism as far as I can see is one of perceived value, but, as you say, when you get on the clock and the remaining talent at O-Line is ridiculously diminished, you do what you gotta do.

30 responses at the time I write this.

Not one in defense of the pick.

    1. Bob says:

You tend to drive away your cowboys readership if you troll them.

Most logical cowboys fans are busy arguing with the raging mob on BtB. Go there if you want to get educated.

  6. Juz Saying says:

Lance The combine freak but did nothing to make his QB better another sweep from Americas team ova the Has been team as in has not ever & I mean ever been to the Super Bowl!

  7. Realtick says:

Jerry and Co. managed to pull off the double whammy; give up value in a trade and then reach for a player early.

That’s like paying the penalty to take money out of your 401K early to pay credit card bills.

  8. […] Jimmy is his post on Dallas’ 1st round pick, Travis Frederick. That is a short, simple post. And it is titled Cowboys Failsauce.  As I said on Twitter, I think Jerry Jones did a great job and deserves a contract extension to […]

  9. NothingToSeeHere says:

I can now delete BtBeast from the list of sites I regularly check. Jimmy shows flashes of having interesting things to say and some of his analyses have been first rate, but then a post like this comes along. I will find another source of an opposing viewpoint that is more reason based.

    1. LOL @ “more reason based”, as if there was any sort of reasoned rationale behind this pick.

  10. Jimmy is so dumb... says:

    it’s painful.

  11. Tim says:

From your Giants’ commentary: “I haven’t watched enough real game tape of Pugh to offer any kind of legitimate analysis otherwise. The Giants needed to get younger along their OL, and they did. So I’ll give them a temporary golf clap”

Pugh was a bit of a reach as well, but the Giants get praise and the Cowboys get merciless ripping?

As you have repeatedly pointed out, Jerry has not invested high picks in the OL in the past.. Now, he’s used two first rounders in 4 years on the OL. He has done exactly what you have asked him to do, and apparently learned from his past neglect.

I certainly understand questioning whether this guy would’ve been available at #47 instead of #31. But the Cowboys needed interior OL help, and they drafted the highest interior OL player on their board. Can no longer mock Jerry for a lack of investment.

    1. And here you see... says:

what a talentless HACK Jimmy is. He rips the Cowboys–never ending, relentlessly, inexorably–for neglecting their o-line, and never spending any 1st round currency on it. He even admits it–how many times has he re-posted that same shit fucking article about the Cowboys o-line, going year by year?

And, so, when the Cowboys FINALLY spend a 1st round pick on an o-lineman–on the best Center in the draft–what does he do? He RIPS them anyway!

Totally pathetic, self-contradictory, with zero integrity (sums up Jimmy).

      1. archarya says:

omg bro. In 88 words you’ve (anonymously) said a dude that goes to all star games and practices to actually…you know…scout dudes….has zero integrity. Go read espn’s nfc blog you fucking retard.

        1. JIMMY A SCOUT!! LMFAO!! says:

Dude, yeah, Jimmy knows how to “scout dudes.” LMFAO!!

          YOU FUCKING MORON!!!

  12. Dez Bryant's Probation Officer says:

Third best Travis in the draft!

    1. 4th best Frederick.

      1. Bob says:

        Best beard.

    1. *grabs the mic* And now if you look to your left, you can see a rabid Cowboys fan reach the “Anger and bargaining” stage of grief.

      1. NoDecaf says:

Mushroom cloud, TNT, mangled body parts, butthurt Dallas egos…

  14. HOPE says:

I saw Travis Frederick as a 3rd round pick in many mock drafts.

How many players are still on the team from both 2008 and 2009 Cowboys draft classes. I believe only Orlando Scandrick.

Its hard to have confidence in Jerry Jones with that track records.

    1. wait, so it sounds like you don’t like Jimmy’s opinion of your turrible first round….is this accurate?

  16. horatius says:

ALSO PHILLY WON 0 SUPER BOWLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now, that that’s out of the way.

    Bwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahahaha Cowboy fans.

    1. Scott says:

haha this is amazing. Snapshot of how butthurt cowgirl fans are

      1. Your mom is butthurt says:

after she takes 50 dicks up her ass every night.

        1. PHILLYRICK says:

LOL this guy, right up here, is my favorite angry Cowboys fan of the thread, so far.

        2. Someone pissed in your Cheerios….you are just to blind to see that is was actually Jerrah Jones….ouch

  17. Scott says:

On BGN I was talking about how I knew Cowboys fans would be offended by this. If you don’t agree with this you are blind. Just look at what St Louis got for less in comparison

    1. Tim says:

I guess the logic Stephen Jones talked through to the press was that the value they got from the additional 3rd rounder was greater than the value of taking Reid at #18, by their scoring system. So you have to judge it based not on an “what is the value of these picks versus these picks” in the abstract, but “what is the value of what they got versus the actual pick they would have had to make.” They didn’t seem to think that moving down and missing out on Reid was that big a loss.

      1. Logic & compelling reasoning... says:

…like that will always fail at this blog. Jimmy won’t even be able to comprehend the 1st sentence, let alone the entirety of the concepts contained within.

        1. I really struggled with the second sentence fwiw.

  18. outsyderz34 says:

I didn’t get just the third round pick either.

  19. David_Does_Dallas says:

You are usually wrong at determining the value of Cowboys players, let us hope that doesn’t end tonight.

      1. David_Does_Dallas says:

Maybe? I don’t know, I am really confused and sad right now.

  20. Bob says:

    Oh fuck off Jimmy.

    1. john says:

Haha, nothing to say in defense of the pick?

      1. Bob says:

I’m too busy trying to stop BtB burning down.

But we’ll get the last laugh. Just you wait.

  21. deg0ey says:

CBS has him rated as the best C in the draft. Little consolation for Cowboys fans, but it’s the best I’ve got.
