Film breakdown: The Eagles’ go-to play from inside the 5 yard line

In the 2nd preseason game against the Patriots, Nick Foles hit Clay Harbor for a 3 yard TD pass.  It was the same exact play that the Eagles scored on to go ahead against the Browns this afternoon with 1:18 to play.  Here’s what that play looked like against the Patriots a few weeks ago, in all its simplicity:

Here’s video of that play.

After the game, Clay Harbor broke down the X’s and O’s of it for me:

It’s basically a 3-man route.  It’s a basic route, which is a 10-yard in by Brent (Celek), outside release on the DE. If the linebacker over us (the SAM) covers Brent, I run an under route, just a 2-step shallow cross over the ball and keep going depending on the coverage. And if the (SAM) goes with Brent, I’ll have 1-on-1 with the MIKE LB.  That’s exactly what happened.  Depending on the way he plays you, you might want to go over him, or under him, and he was playing a little deep, so I crossed his face and (Michael Vick) put the ball where it needed to be.

Same look today:

Same result:

Here’s video of today’s play.

Let us hope they have more red zone plays that have been cooked up this year. I’m glad clay has become more of a target. I hope Vick starts to check down more soon.

Was Bryce Brown in there inside of the 2-minute warning?

    1. deg0ey says:

Yeah – had a run on 1st and goal immediately after the 2-minute warning. Got tackled for a loss and then Shady came back in.

      1. ATLEagle says:

ya, because why would you possibly want to use an all pro tailback who has a proven record of knowing how to get in the end zone.

        1. He still did a better job than Ronnie Brown.

Hey Jimmy, I don’t know if you take requests, but it would be interesting to see how many running plays were negated by penalties (forcing long down-to-go yardage) and if that contributed to the highly skewed pass/run ratio. Thanks bro.
As always, great work with the site.

that’s nice and all BUT why is their Go-To on 1st and 2nd down NOT to Shady?!

    1. Why give the ball to one of the best RBs in the league when you can do that little foofy shovel pass play that everyone in the league knows now, especially the Browns, who all used to be assistants on your team?

      1. Steve says:

The first play I thought was going to be the shovel pass- they had the formation lined up; the inside hand-off was a surprise.

        1. CulDaddy says:

          foofy. nuff said.

  10. Steve says:

Nice breakdown; I think they put Celek up on the line to take on the guy in front of him. Take out the over guy, give Harbor a clean release.
