Notes from around the NFC East: Andy Reid absent from camp, and Brodney Pool losing his grasp of the Cowboys SS job

UPDATE: It was revealed by Eagles GM Howie Roseman that Andy Reid’s son, Garrett Reid, died this morning in his dorm room at Lehigh University.

According to every Eagles beat writer at Eagles camp, Andy Reid was absent from walk-throughs this morning.  The team said a prayer on one of the side fields before practice.  I’ll be there for the afternoon session, but we should learn something soon, as GM Howie Roseman is going to address reporters after practice.  No use in speculating on anything for now, as we should be hearing what his absence is all about within the next half hour or so.  No notes from last night, by the way, because there was pouring rain and the team moved the practice indoors.

According to Tim MacMahan of ESPN, Barry Church appears to be winning the SS job over Brodney Pool:

You know who isn’t surprised in the slightest by this?  Me. Don’t know if Barry Church has been really good, Brodney Pool has been really bad, or a combo of the two.

Another setback for Morris Claiborne.  He’s going to miss about a week with a sprained MCL.  Claiborne missed all of OTAs and minicamp recovering from wrist surgery, and now he’ll miss a week of camp.

What a waste of talent Kentwan Balmer has turned out to be.  He left Redskins camp this week.  That’s the second time he has done that in his career.  This guy was awesome in college at North Carolina, got drafted in the first round, and hasn’t been able to stick with a team for more than 2 consecutive years.  That’s probably the end of his NFL career.

A reminder to my Giants readers: Beginning tomorrow, I’ll be up in Albany checking out Giants camp.  If they allow the same level of access that the Eagles allow, I should have a ton of notes on what I see up there.
