LeSean McCoy signs 5 year extension: Eagles entire projected starting offense locked up through at least the next 2 seasons

I'm rich, biotch!

After trading Asante Samuel to the Falcons and shedding his bulky contract, the Eagles had the most cap space in the league, at $21.5 million under the cap.  They put that to use today when they locked up LeSean McCoy to a contract extension that will run through 2017.  The Eagles made it a priority to lock up their core players this offseason, as they got long term deals done with Trent Cole, Todd Herremans, DeSean Jackson, Evan Mathis, and now McCoy.

In an otherwise disappointing year for the Eagles, McCoy, who only turns 24 in July, had a stellar 2011 season, racking up 20 total TDs and over 1600 yards from scrimmage.  McCoy is arguably among the three best running backs in the game.  Dollar figures aren’t available at this time, but I’m sure he didn’t come cheap.  I’ll update them when they’re made available.

The Eagles now have all of their projected offensive starters under their control through at least the 2013 season:

  • QB Michael Vick: 2016
  • RB LeSean McCoy: 2017
  • WR DeSean Jackson: 2016
  • WR Jeremy Maclin: 2013
  • WR Jason Avant: 2014
  • TE Brent Celek: 2016
  • LT Demetress Bell: 2016
  • LG Evan Mathis: 2016
  • C Jason Kelce: 2014
  • RG Danny Watkins: 2014
  • RT Todd Herremans: 2016

UPDATE: Aaaaand, the numbers are in. They’re about what I expected:

  1. Hey very cool website!! Guy .. Beautiful .. Superb .. I’ll bookmark your blog and take the feeds additionally?I’m glad to find numerous useful information right here in the submit, we need develop more techniques in this regard, thank you for sharing. . . . . .

  2. CulDaddy says:

Shady gives cred to his older bro LeRon for paving his way to the NFL. LeRon went to Indiana Univ of PA. So did I. Coincidence? I think not. You’re welcome Shady!

  3. Immynimmy says:

    Maclin is next.

  4. Trueblue63 says:

Sounds like a fair deal, I’m curious about the tail years. That’s when the squabbling usually starts.

  5. Keith Petres says:

So the Eagles traded Asante (and his contract) for a 7th round pick and LeSean McCoy. Not too shabby.

  6. Gary says:

Do you predict a Maclin extension this season, next offseason, or during the 2013 season? I think if he has another solid (or even better, hopefully) year in 2012, his situation will be similar to Shady’s and he’ll get one about one year from now.

    1. Yeah, I think next year would be the most likely time to get his deal done. With Maclin, while I’m sure he’d love to get a long term deal done, he’s not exactly starving. He was a #1 pick in the old CBA, so he’s already making about $3 mil/year

  7. Tracer Bullet says:

Now let’s hope they have a few young defenders they’ll want to extend in a year of two.

  8. brisulph says:

solid contract… not back breaking, but not too low for his sake.

  9. theguyotc says:

Shouldn’t Kelce and Watkins be 2015?

They both signed 4 year deals in 2011.

    1. Jimmy Kempski says:

Signed through 2014. They’ll be FA in 2015.

  10. Imp says:

$45 million, 20.75 guaranteed. Similar numbers to the contract Foster got last year.

    1. deg0ey says:

Looks to me like it has been deliberately constructed to be fractionally higher than the contract Foster got. Shady gets an extra $15,000 in guaranteed money :p
