A peek around at what the rest of the NFC is doing

Together again

NFC North

Packers – Lost their center, Scott Wells, to the Rams, and backup QB Matt Flynn to the Seahawks. Otherwise quiet.

Lions – Lost starting CB Eric Wright to the Bucs.  Gave Calvin Johnson a ridiculous 8 year, $150.5 million contract.  Re-signed Stephen Tulloch to a 5 year deal, money still unknown.

Bears – Traded two 3’s for Brandon Marshall.  Brought in a competent backup in Jason Campbell (a year too late).  Signed KR/WR Eric Weems away from the Falcons.  Let Brandon Meriweather walk (signed with the Skins).  Saw TE Kellen Davis flirt with a few teams (Dallas included), but eventually re-signed him. Lost OT Frank Omiyale to the Seahawks. Re-signed a few more of their own, most notably Israel Idonije.

Vikings – Signed TE John Carlson to a 4 year $25 million deal, a contract that was largely panned (although I happen to like it for them). Let OG Steve Hutchinson walk (he signed with the Titans), let CB Cedric Griffin walk (Skins), signed OG Geoff Schwartz away from Carolina. They are now on the clock.

NFC South and West after the jump…

NFC South

An image you won't see after the 2012 Super Bowl

Saints – Oof. In the bounty scandal, lost head coach Sean Payton for the season. Lost their assistant head coach Joe Vitt for 6 games. Lost their 2nd round pick in 2012 and 2013. Lost their GM Mickey Loomis for 8 games. More suspensions for various players may also be upcoming. Lost arguably the best OG in the game (Carl Nicks) to a division rival (Bucs). Lost WR Robert Meachem to the Chargers. Are reportedly far apart in their negotiations to sign Drew Brees to a long-term deal. Signed OG Ben Grubbs away from the Ravens. Signed Brodrick Bunkley away from the Broncos. Re-signed Marques Colston to a long-term deal.

Falcons – Re-signed a few of their own, namely John Abraham, lost KR/WR Eric Weems to the Bears.

Panthers – Lost a couple players to Dallas (backup OG Mackenzy Bernadeau and ILB Dan Connor). Lost OG Geoff Schwartz to the Vikings. Lost OG Travelle Wharton to the Bengals.  Signed RB Mike Tolbert, giving them a very good trio of backs in Williams-Stewart-Tolbert.

Buccaneers – Spent big. Signed Vincent Jackson to a 5 years, $55,555,555 deal.  Signed Carl Nicks to a 5 year deal worth $47.5 million. Signed CB Eric Wright to a 5 year $38 million deal.

NFC West

49ers – Made a late, strong push for Peyton Manning, leading Alex Smith to go sniffing around for a new team, didn’t get Manning, were able to re-sign Smith – A lot of news for no actual change.  One receiver left (Josh Morgan), and two came in (Randy Moss and Mario Manningham). Re-signed CB Carlos Rogers. Lost Adam Snyder to the Cards. Lost Shawntae Spencer to the Raiders.

Cardinals – Put their hat in the ring for Peyton Manning, didn’t get him, will ride with Kolb for one more year (or at least a few starts). Signed OG Adam Snyder.  Have otherwise been quiet.

Seahawks – Lots going on with the Seahawks.  Signed Matt Flynn. Signed DE/DT Jason Jones away from the Titans. Signed OT Frank Omiyale away from the Bears.   Re-signed DT Red Bryant. Lost TE John Carlson. Lost OG Robert Gallery to the Pats. Lost OG Mike Gibson to the Eagles. Lost Charlie Whitehurst back to the Chargers in a very AJ Feeley-like manner.

Rams – While it’s debatable on whether or not the Skins made the right deal to trade up with the Rams, it’s undeniable that the Rams made a great deal to get what they got.  They’ll control the 2013 and 2014 drafts with an extra first round pick each year, and can bring in some immediate talent this year as well with a high 1 and a couple of 2’s. Signed Cortland Finnegan to a 5 year $50 million deal. Signed DE Kendall Langford away from the Dolphins. Lost WR Brandon Lloyd to the Pats. Lost CB Ron Bartell to the Raiders. Lost their defensive coordinator Gregg Williams indefinitely.

  26. Anders says:

If Cutler can stay healthy, that Bears offense will be tough to stop. Top QB, top RB and top WR, with a good defense and ST, they will have good field position through most of the games.

  27. Immynimmy says:

    When you said:

“Gave Calvin Johnson a ridiculous 8 year, $150.5 million contract. ”

Are you saying that he’s not worth that or that it’s just a big deal? Cause, to me, he’s worth it.

    1. I do think it’s a bit much.

I put that deal in perspective like this: In 2011, he caught 96 passes. I think the Lions will sign on for that number every season for the next 8 years.

      Now, $150.5 over 8 years is $18.8 million/year.

96 catches per year. $18.8 million per year. That’s almost $200,000 per catch. Now, I understand it’s not completely that simple, and he opens up a lot of other things in that offense, but that’s a hell of a lot of money to pay a guy that touches the football 6 times per game. I just don’t think you can give “Top 5 QB money” to a WR.

But that’s just how I see it. I won’t put up much of a fight if people really love the guy that much, because obvious he’s a special, rare talent. It’s nothing against him. It’s about the position he plays.

      1. Immynimmy says:

        Fair enough.

      2. Will B says:

Well, one team would be bound to give him that kind of money if not the Lions. Maybe even more.

  28. bdawk4ever says:

I think the Panthers now have a great chance to contend for the NFC South.

  29. Kyle says:

Randy Moss to the 49ers too.

    1. Mark Sitko says:

Great point – that is a huge move for them…they actually have 2 WRs now to compliment their TEs and Crabtree…Maningham is a huge upgrade over Morgan and that moron that cost them the chamionship game…Kyle the sissy

      1. Mark Sitko says:

To be clear I mean Kyle Williams…I wrote that and looked up to realize your name is Kyle…unless this is Kyle Willams – in which I totally mean it – you are dispicable sissy that should retire…gave the Giants another SB…jerk

    2. Crap… Happened before FA began, so I missed it. Bad job by me. Added.
