When it comes to TD/INT ratio, Rex Grossman is in some really crappy company

Yesterday, Rex Grossman re-signed with the Redskins.  My quick-twitch thinking was that the move made sense.  Grossman already knows the offense, and if the golden child isn’t ready to start on Day 1 (or if he goes down with some sort of injury), Grossman can hold down the fort until RG3 is ready to go/return.

For his career, Rex Grossman has thrown more INT’s than TD’s, which is particularly bad considering he has thrown 1562 passes.  Typically, when you’re ineffective that long in the NFL, you get handed a clipboard.  Grossman has gotten an inordinate number of chances to start, despite his repeated poor play.

There are 9 QB’s in the NFL with at least 900 career pass attempts that have more INT’s than TD’s:

QB Career Attempts TD INT Current team
David Carr 2264 65 71 Giants
Rex Grossman 1562 56 60 Redskins
Kyle Boller 1519 48 54 Free agent
Derek Anderson 1436 53 55 Free agent
Vince Young 1304 46 51 Free agent
Josh McCown 1113 37 44 Bears
Chad Henne 1065 31 37 Jaguars
JP Losman 952 33 34 Free agent
Trent Edwards 927 26 30 Eagles

That’s a lot of junk.  Only David Carr has more career passes among that group, which makes sense, since he was the first overall pick in the 2002 draft, and had a longer leash than most QB’s otherwise might. Four of the above players don’t even have a team, and one of them, Trent Edwards, is sort of being viewed as 4th on the depth chart for a team that only has 2 other QB’s currently on the roster.

A backup that turns the ball over isn’t ideal, obviously, but that’s especially true for a team like the Redskins that has a really good defense.  Personally, I’d prefer a player that makes safe decisions and keeps me in the game.  If you look around at the other backup QB options in free agency around the NFL, the pickings are slim, so I don’t completely blame the Skins for bringing Rex back on a 1 year deal.  It’s not like the Skins are going to realistically complete for a Super Bowl this season anyway, in my opinion.

The Skins need to eventually develop a competent backup.  It’s noteworthy that John Beck remains under contract as well in Washington, by the way.  He’ll make $1.3 million in 2012.  If I’m the Skins, I’m releasing him immediately.  There’s no way I’m paying my 3 that kind of money, especially being so close up against the cap.  In addition to drafting RG3, I’m also looking to draft another QB that I can begin to groom as RG3 insurance.

Ditto to Redskin fans comment..the pickings are slim..One “ding” changes everything in the NFC East..Orton was a good move though

  9. Redskins Fan says:

The big question for the Redskins is “If not Rex, who?”

There aren’t any veteran QBs out there with more upside as far as the Redskins are concerned (emphasis on Veteran).

Rex is still probably the 2nd best backup QB in the East…. but that’s more an indictment of the backup QBs in the East than anything else. And he came a lot cheaper than Orton did for the Cowboys.

One thing I’ve noticed about Rex is that he seems to just have horrendous games occasionally, i.e. 4 interceptions. I wonder how that affects stats — and if a comparison of games where he had 0 interceptions or 1+ would be more telling for Rex’s inconsistency. That may explain the number of chances he’s had because of the “everyone has a bad game” mentality.

  11. I should also note that my boy Kevin Kolb (a player I had really believed in) has 572 pass attempts. 20 TD’s, 22 INT’s. He’s one full bad season away from joining this group.

Kolb is craptastic. I still can’t believe the Eagles got a 2 and DCR for him.
