Eagles extend their best defensive player through 2017

Early on in the 2011 season, the Eagles played the Falcons on Sunday Night Football.  The box score for Trent Cole read 6 tackles, 1 sack, 3 TFL’s, but that did little to tell the story of what Cole actually did in that game.  He basically made a mockery of Falcons LT Sam Baker’s attempts to keep him from from looking like little more than a tackle sled.  Whatever he went to… the bull rush (especially the bull rush), the arm over, the rip, it didn’t matter.  Baker could do absolutely nothing to keep Cole from collapsing the pocket on virtually every pass play and making life miserable for Matt Ryan.  It was one of the most dominant performances I’ve ever seen from a defensive lineman.

I think that’s kinda of the thing with Trent Cole.  His stats are good, but I don’t think they truly tell the story of how good a football player he is.  He’s a great pass rusher, and an elite run stopper from the DE position, and a leader in the locker room.

This morning the Eagles gave him a contract extension, although details are currently unavailable.  Yesterday, they extended Todd Herremans.  It looks like a pattern.  Ross Tucker had an interesting thought on what’s going on here:

Cole has played under contract for the past few years and never complained that he was underpaid (relative to the other DE’s around the league).  Well deserved raise.

Now draft Derek Wolfe out of Cincy and keep the Cincinnati streak going

Babin will never be the defensive force that Cole is.

  12. Tom says:

He’s their best player on either side of the ball. Since he and Babin are supposed to be close, maybe he can teach Jason that DE’s are allowed to tackle RB’s (and not just QB’s).

I was at the Cincy tie game a few years back. Cole was utterly dominant in that game as well. He abused Whitworth over and over and then they brought someone else in at LT and Cole abused him.

It’s a performance that went unnoticed midst the tie nonsense and McNabb claiming he didn’t know games could end in ties.

He’ll never get the credit he deserves. He memorized me that game and his run stopping ability from the end position does so on a weekly basis. I’m glad to see he’ll be here for the long haul.
