Wait, so the Giants gave Terrell Thomas $28.4 million over 4 years?

Wow.  I had earlier praised this signing assuming Thomas got reasonable numbers, but holy cow!  $28.4 million and $11 million guaranteed?  I can understand where they might “trust his work ethic and talent,” as Adam Schein notes above, but I wouldn’t exactly be in a rush to give that kind of deal to a player that, as of a couple weeks ago, was only “at a fast paced jog” in his recovery process.

This is also bad news for the Cowboys, if indeed they are going “all in for Chiefs CB Brandon Carr.”  If Thomas got $28.4 million over 4 years without playing a single down in 2011, what’s the market for Carr going to be?

I like Terrell Thomas, but not this much.

  8. Free Plax says:

So TT’s contract is really a one year 2 million dollar prove it deal, if he can play than the Giants can pick up the option on the rest of the money.

    1. Linky for future reference please.

  9. Joe D says:

Thought #2… I think the technology is getting much better at bringing people back from ligament tears… Doctor mustve said he’ll be 95-99% healthy by at least week 6

  10. Joe D says:

i thought for sure that the GIants would let him walk especially since they have a healthy Prince …

Seriously how did the Giants win the SB with their O-line and Aaron Ross at starting CB?

    1. ArthuroMolenda says:

      Eli Manning.

    2. brisulph says:

      All luck.

    1. brisulph says:

looks like they signed him for 284 million according to that link. XD

      1. ATLeagle says:

I hope they didnt front load all of that into the un-capped year.

  11. brisulph says:

They must be convinced he will be back to form after the injury… not sure how they woudl draw that conclusion though.

    1. I met the Giants’ doctors in the Indianapolis airport. We talked for a minute or two as we put our shoes back on after going through security. Seriously.

They seemed smart. Maybe they think his recovery is going very well. I’m sure the Giants did their homework. But that’s still a very surprising amount of money.

      1. brisulph says:

Recovery going well is one thing… but KNOWING he will be back to where he was on the field? No way to know, this is a huge roll of the bones here.

  12. ArthuroMolenda says:

    What the hell ?

I swore I’d never criticize this FO after the 2011 season but man … c’mon on.

  13. Free Plax says:

Ohm Youngmisuk put on his twitter page the Giants have a protective option after year one what ever that means, I’m sure more detail will follow but it sounds like they figured out away to void the contract with out much hit to their Cap situation next year even with the 11 Mil

    1. Anders says:

If you read the tweet, is says option for 11 mill. Basicly means its a one year contract but if the Giants pick up the option it becomes a 4 year deal. Its very similar to what the Eagles did with Babin and Jenkins last season.

  14. Free Plax says:

Giants have an option to dump him after one year, so if he doens’t play up to par they can get rid of the contract without much of a cap hit going forward

    1. Even if they dump him after a year, it’s $11 million guaranteed.

      1. Anders says:

Are you sure? The way I read it, is that is an option.

        1. giants fan says:

I read it as 11 million guaranteed, but the Giants are typically very careful with these kinds of contracts. Hell, they let Steve Smith walk over a million dollars because they thought he wasn’t going to be ready to play until halfway through the season. I trust the brass on this one.

        2. I think it’s “option for $28.4 million” total, but $11M is guaranteed. He just worded it awkwardly. There’s nothing guaranteed about a club option.

          1. Anders says:

ahh I just read as a club option and if they used it a part of future salary would be guaranteed.

  15. Shaun says:

Damn!! I’d hate to see what he wouldve gotten if he was fully healthy this past season….maybe the G-men know something we dont know….

    1. Free Plax says:

If healthy 7 mil for a starting corner is not all that bad.

      1. Shaun says:

        I know…. that’s why I said I hate to see what he’d get if healthy-maybe 9 or 10 mil per year maybe

  16. Tracer Bullet says:

Maybe they’re trying to prove a point? “Hey, Eagles? You think you’re the only ones who can give stupidly large contracts to players coming off of knee surgery? That Steve Smith deal ain’t shit, son.”

    1. Free Plax says:

Smith had micro fracture surgery that’s a lot diffrent than an ACL, Sounds like they believe he will be ready to play next season, with Smith they knew he wouldn’t. The Eagles were trying to rub the Giants face in crap and took a chance.
