This news was expected, and could be good news to the Eagles, who of course are going to be shopping for linebackers this offseason. Lofton is probably the best available option among inside linebackers in this year’s free agent class. The Browns recently signed ILB D’Qwell Jackson to a 5 year, $42.5 million deal (although only $10.4 million is guaranteed), so it’ll be interesting to see how the market develops for Lofton. Conversely, it’s one less cornerback available for teams like the Cowboys and Redskins, who are likely to be shopping for cover guys.
Also noteworthy is that the Niners will be using the tag on safety Dashon Goldson, who again, might have been a target for the Cowboys or Redskins, assuming the Skins don’t (or can’t) re-sign LaRon Landry.
UPDATE: The Titans are now reportedly likely to franchise Cortland Finnegan. The Cowboys were said to be targeting Finnegan. Grant Paulsen is also reporting that the Redskins had interest in both Grimes and Finnegan:
UPDATE: OK, so now the Titans are reportedly NOT franchising Finnegan. Come on, guys… Don’t have me jumping through hoops all day:
