Schefter: Falcons to franchise tag Brent Grimes, meaning Curtis Lofton could be up for grabs

This news was expected, and could be good news to the Eagles, who of course are going to be shopping for linebackers this offseason.  Lofton is probably the best available option among inside linebackers in this year’s free agent class.  The Browns recently signed ILB D’Qwell Jackson to a 5 year, $42.5 million deal (although only $10.4 million is guaranteed), so it’ll be interesting to see how the market develops for Lofton.  Conversely, it’s one less cornerback available for teams like the Cowboys and Redskins, who are likely to be shopping for cover guys.

Also noteworthy is that the Niners will be using the tag on safety Dashon Goldson, who again, might have been a target for the Cowboys or Redskins, assuming the Skins don’t (or can’t) re-sign LaRon Landry.

UPDATE: The Titans are now reportedly likely to franchise Cortland Finnegan.  The Cowboys were said to be targeting Finnegan.  Grant Paulsen is also reporting that the Redskins had interest in both Grimes and Finnegan:

UPDATE: OK, so now the Titans are reportedly NOT franchising Finnegan.  Come on, guys… Don’t have me jumping through hoops all day:

  55. Euler.is.a.pimp says:

The guy is such a liability in coverage. I’m not a fan.

    1. Agree that that seems to be his weakness. I know there’s some stat floating around out there that Lofton gave up 5 TD passes this season. I’d like to see the tape of those to determine how much he was truly at fault on those.

      1. Immynimmy says:

He’s better than 5 TDs. I mean, Tulloch isn’t great in coverage either. Are there really any MLBs that excel in coverage? I still don’t know what the hell defensive scheme we are running, but it looks like for our MLB, we just need a read-n-react guy. Lofton is that guy. He makes tackles, he finds the ball, and he has great instincts.

        1. Undoubtedly he’s a lot better than what the Eagles have.

  56. Immynimmy says:

Good points how it’s good for the Eagles and bad for the Skins/Cowboys. Also of note, the more free agent LBs available, the higher the pool and the lower the price.
