Giants to sign a franchise tagged Ray Rice away from the Ravens? Yeah… uh… no.

Not returning to NJ anytime soon.

Apparently today, Pro Football Talk threw out some speculation that the Giants could be tempted to sign Ray Rice away from the Ravens.  I initially ignored it, but since I’ve already gotten two emails about it, and have seen it re-posted in a few places, please allow me to shoot this nonsense down immediately.  From PFT:

Still, it’s hard not to wonder whether another team decides to try to sign Rice away from the Ravens, since the price for an offer sheet that the Ravens choose not to match would be a first-round draft pick.  For teams at the bottom of the round (like the Patriots or the Giants, who play in Rice’s home state of Jersey), trading a pick for a Pro Bowl talent still in the front end of his prime could be tempting.

ONE: Compensation for signing away a franchised tagged player is TWO 1st round picks, not one.

TWO: In the Tom Coughlin era, the Giants have never drafted a running back higher than the 4th round. I’m not sure they’re going to be giving up two first rounders for a back anytime soon.

THREE: The Giants already have a good running back with a similar skill set as Rice in Ahmad Bradshaw.

FOUR: Even if the Giants wanted to sign Rice, they’re one of just four teams that are over the salary cap.  They’ll be shedding money of the books, not giving bigtime money to players that are still under the control of another team.

What? I thought you’d be all over this voodoo logic, “(…Giants, who play in Rice’s home state of Jersey)”. Ah, that’s it. The Giants are going to offer 2 firsts for Rice because he’s a Joy-sey kid. Makes sense. Save on air-fare.

No fair, you used common sense. How is Florio supposed to compete with that?

100% agree, the Giants should draft secondary or oline with that 1st round pick, because I doubt even Peterson or McCoy could run behind that terrible line
