Linky, February 11, 2012: Stanford Routt, free agency appetizer

First, a quick note: Tons of articles out there about Belichick wanting his defense to take away Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz, and make Mario Manningham and Bear Pascoe beat them.  They mostly paint Belichick as an idiot.  I think that’s totally unfair.  If I were Belichick, I’d be looking to take away Nicks and Cruz in that spot too, as would anyone with half a clue of what the Giants offense was in 2011.  And frankly, the coverage on Manningham was actually quite good.  Eli threw a perfect ball.  Manningham obviously made an incredible catch.  Sometimes, when you take away Michael Jordan, you get beat by John Paxson.  That’s just sports:

Crap.  Longer drive for me to cover them in camp this year.  Last year, because of uncertainty of when the lockout would end, training camp was held at the Meadowlands.  I guess the G Men aren’t superstitious.

Do the Giants dare consider bringing back Jeremy Shockey for 2012 – Doug Rush, b/r

No.

Eagles, Cowboys, and Redskins after the jump…

Sheil’s 2nd part of a running series with the BC standout.  Great stuff.

Samuel: “Of course” I want to be back – Jonathan Tamari, philly.com

Don’t bet on it.

Todd Bowles: “I’m straight Philadelphia” – Jason Brewer, BGN

Gotta add “son” to end of that statement to show you’re also “street,” Todd.

Stanford Routt

Cowboys show interest in former Raiders CB Stanford Routt – Calvin Watkins, ESPN Dallas

Routt was drafted by the Raiders under Rob Ryan, and played for Ryan from 2005-08.

The Cowboys have company.

Jerry Jones: Cowboys will take best player available in the NFL Draft – Jon Machota, SportsDay DFW

What if the “best player” is a QB?  An OT?  A RB?  A WR?  Are they really going to stick to that statement?

Ahmad Bradshaw: I don’t see Cowboys winning Super Bowl with Tony Romo – SportsDay DFW

“It all comes in together,” Bradshaw continued. “If the fans don’t believe it, the team doesn’t, and [the fans] kind of doubtful with Romo.

So, if I’m understanding Ahmad’s logic correctly, the belief of the fans in the team is the biggest factor in whether said player will achieve postseason success or not.

Excellent film breakdown here.

Hankerson gets a trio of new tattoos -Brian Tinsman, Redskins Mothership

All terrible.

Stanford Routt brings good and bad – Rich Tandler, Real Redskins

He played nearly every snap for Oakland last year and opposing quarterbacks completed just 51 percent of their passes when throwing to Routt’s area. Routt allowed just 11 yards per receptions and defensed 10 passes.

That’s the good Routt. The bad Routt committed 17 penalties including eight for holding and seven for pass interference. The total number of penalties committed was the highest on the Raiders and the highest among NFL cornerbacks. He also allowed nine touchdown passes, the most of any cornerback.

The penalties are not a new issue. He has committed 38 in the past three seasons.

Oof.  Penalties aside, Rich points out a few more reasons why he doesn’t think the Skins would be a natural fit for Routt.

Agreed on BB not being an idiot… playing the odds, asking Manningham to beat you, as opposed to Nicks and Cruz, just makes sense. It just wasn’t going to happen on that drive.

I want him to throw a “jawn” in there.

    1. Judges…

      Yes, we’ll also accept “jawn.”
