Linky, February 8, 2012: A couple of torn ACL’s for the Giants

Roger Goodell's former life

Cole: 2011 Birds inches away from being great – Les Bowen,

“We had a bad year. We just couldn’t pull it off at the last minute. Andy’s a great coach . . . We were right there, inches away from being great, being a dominant, dominant team. I think some teams are going to be worried about playing us” in 2012.

Trent, with all due respect, you were 4-8 and beat 4 bad QB’s to close the season.  I’m not sure I’d say the Eagles were “inches” away.

Eagles feel cheated – Geoff Mosher, Courier-Post

Commissioner Roger Goodell handed out $750,000 in fines — $500,000 for Belichick and an additional $250,000 to the franchise — and stripped New England of a first-round draft pick.

But the league destroyed the evidence and didn’t disclose its investigation findings.

“It’s like the NFL’s dirty little secret,” Hugh Douglas said. “The commissioner burned tapes, burned the evidence. It makes you wonder why they burned it.”

I don’t know if the Pats cheated in the 2004 Super Bowl and how much it even mattered if they did.  But I’m 100% in agreement with Hugh Douglas’ comment.  What happened to those tapes?  I recently ordered HBO and have been catching up on Boardwalk Empire.  My wife and I have been watching a couple episodes per night for the past week.  Roger Goodell is Nucky Thompson.

Drafting a wide receiver to replace DeSean – Sheil Kapadia,

Sheil is killing it so far this offseason.  Worth a look if for no other reason than to check out how first round picks at WR have done the past five seasons.

Are the Redskins more stable than the Eagles? Jack Anderson, NBC Washington

Coming soon to the Dallas bar scene... Kyle Orton?

FA Watch: Cowboys went after Orton once – Rob Phillips, Cowboys Mothership

Makes sense if Orton can’t find a job where he can compete to be the starter.

Swaggering Giants mock Cowboys -Michael McCarthy, USA Today

Giants co-owner Steve Tisch took a swipe at “America’s Team” in Dallas after a ticker tape parade down New York’s Canyon of Heroes attended by nearly 1 million people:

“There’s a group of guys in Dallas that call themselves ‘America’s Team,’ but looking out at all of you and the millions of people in the streets [Tuesday], we’re ‘America’s Dream.'”

I’m not sure what that’s even supposed to mean.

Cowboys hope draft fortunes have changes after picking Tyron Smith – Rainer Sabin, SportsDay DFW

I still feel that OL is their biggest need.

Peyton Manning is publicly negotiating a contract with a team near you – Anthony Brown, Redskins Hog Heaven

Gambling tout Bovada (was Bodog) quotes 5/2 odds that the Washington Redskins will sign Manning for the 2012 season. The Arizona Cardinals, who signed former Eagles back-up Kevin Kolb last season, are the surprise odds (2/1) on favorites to sign Manning. The Miami Dolphins who are frequently linked to Manning are 3/1 odds.

Report: Davis to get tagged – Rich Tandler, Real Redskins

Smart. Franchise tag money for a TE is $5.4 million this season, not exactly a killer number.

I ran into Jim Haslett and we talked QB draft, Manning, trading up – “Rodskins,” Fan Post section of Hogs Haven

A fan, not one of the editors at Hogs Haven, penned this flat-out lie, and it blew up yesterday.  SB Nation has a section to the side where anyone can write a post.  It’s actually how I originally started writing about football, except that I wrote on the Eagles’ SB Nation site.  It’s crazy that the masses in the comment section largely bought it.  Cautionary tale about applying the smell test to anything you read from an unproven author.  In the aftermath, the editors of Hogs Haven mistakenly took some heat, which was 100% undeserved.

In case you missed this girl at the parade yesterday, she’s more bandwaggony than the Cowboys fan that lives next door to you:

Ballard, Beckum facing surgeries – Paul Schwartz, NY Post

That puts both of their 2012 seasons in serious doubt.  Ballard is a touch SOB, by the way, trying to run and cut on a torn ACL on the sidelines in hopes of getting back into the game in the Super Bowl.

Mario looking to catch contract offer from Giants – Howie Kussoy, NY Post

Don’t bet on Manningham returning.  He’s going to get very good offers elsewhere.  In order to keep him, the Giants are going to have to way overpay for what would be their #3 receiver.  It’s one of the unfortunate consequences of being very strong and very deep at one position.

“I think some teams are going to be worried about playing us’ in 2012.” Really?!?!?! Why would anyone be afraid to face a team that gave up five 4th quarter leads last year?

  26. Jason-E says:

Boardwalk Empire is the best show on TV.

    1. Immynimmy says:

Disagree. Breaking Bad is. But Boardwalk Empire is def in the top 5.

      1. Sb2bowl says:

Just started watching Breaking Bad on Netflix. Its sick!

  27. brisulph says:

Man, at least the Giants get bandwagon fans the right way… by winning the Super Bowl. The Eagles got their bandwagoners by paying a bunch of guys a lot of money to join their team. That said, the latter method sheds the unwanted drifter fans sooner than the former method.

As for ACL tears, Beckum is probably done as a Giant now, and Ballard will be kept around, but who knows how useful he will be in the future? As it is now, neither one will be effective next year, meaning the Giants have to go get 2 TE in the draft/offseason to replace them.

    1. Turd.Ferguson says:

That shot of Ballard running and trying to cut on the sidelines only to collapse in pain was tough to watch. Hate to see a guy go down like that in the Super Bowl.

      1. brisulph says:

having done that very activity (trying to get back into a basketball game) and having the same result, I suspected he had torn the ACL (though in my case I got the double whammy, tearing the MCL along with it).

  28. giants fan says:

Ugh, I hate bandwagoners. GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE!

Also, thank God the parade is over. It is always a fun idea until you realize that the entire state of New Jersey will be standing between you and work. I can’t believe I share a fan base with some of these people, they’re just as bad as Eagle fans!

  29. Anders says:

Jimmy, I think you are to hard on Cole. How many of the 8 loses was really close? Outside of the Patriots and Seahawks game, the Eagles was in every single game, but was it not for a fumble, dropped pass or stupid 3rd down penalty on defense, the Eagles could have been 12+ winning team.

    1. But they DID fumble, drop passes, and commit dumb penalties. You can say “(X team) could have been a (fill in the number)-win team if they won the close ones” for almost every team in the NFL.

Look at Dallas. If they beat the Jets, Lions, Pats, and Cards, they could have been a 12-win team too. I know I wouldn’t be saying they were inches away from being dominant.

      1. Anders says:

That does not make Coles statment wrong and I think what he really meant is that if they can cut down on stupid mistakes, they should be scary good in 2012. Its just us fans there overreact to everything said by Eagles players and staff because the Giants just won the SB

        1. I would have reacted no differently to the comment if the Giants had been bounced by the Falcons weeks ago. In fact, the comment doesn’t anger me in any way. I just think it sounds foolish after they put together such a horrible season.

          1. Anders says:

I didnt put to much into the first part, but more the 2nd part of quote because this season is done and we can only look forward now.
Maybe im just sick of all that negatisme surrounding the Eagles.
Like long term Eagles fans (not you) saying that they no longer care about these Eagles even tho these Eagles are alot better then the Eagles before AR.

  30. Tracer Bullet says:

    1) What is Cole supposed to say?

    2) He might well be right. The NFL has become a random event generator; the Giants weren’t the best team in the NFL, they weren’t even the best team in conference. Hell, the Patriots only beat two winning teams to get the Super Bowl. Simple mediocrity is no reason to think a team can’t win a championship.

    1. 1) Not that.
      2) There’s a difference between winning on the “random event generator” theory, and then there’s saying that they were inches away from dominating teams.

If he says that teams don’t want to play Philly next year… OK, I might be on board there. But he’s delusional about what this team was in 2011.

      1. Tracer Bullet says:

If you say so. I don’t take the bullshit athletes say about this kind of thing as anything but noise.

        1. Well we agree there.

    2. Scott says:

pats only beat one winning team, and it was because of a missed field goal

  31. amoore42 says:

Does anyone really believe that Peyton Manning is going to sign with the Redskins and play against his little brother TWICE A YEAR?!

Business is business but there is no amount of money that would cause Peyton to do that. The Mannings hate playing against each other. The family hates it when they play against each other. They’d make it more difficult for the two of them to get to the playoffs. It’s ludicrous.

Why doesn’t anyone realize that Peyton to the Skins is an absolute non-story?

    1. Steve D. says:

I agree 100%. I think this every time I hear about Peyton to the Redskins or that the Eagles should sign Peyton. There is no way Peyton is going to the NFC east where he has to play Elie twice a year.

  32. WeNeedLinemen says:

Just desperately hoping that it isn’t Washington that overpays for Manningham. I’d rather overpay Robert Meacham if we take a flyer on a back-up. Manningham just has too much of the “loads of physcial talent – not too many brain cells” about him.

I’ve seen far less of Meacham, but the unknown seems more palatable after a Manningham interview.

Fortunately, Bruce Allen doesn’t seem to be the over-paying type. If Cerrato were still in charge I am certain that one catch would have seen Manningham wearing burgandy and gold as one of the highest paid and least productive wideouts in the league.

The Redskins need a number 1 receiver almost as much as they need a QB but this year’s free agent class looks high on both talent and question marks. Colston -knees. Vincent Jackson – DUIs/moron. DeSeasn Jackson – mouth. Dwayne Bowe attitude/alligator arms.

    1. I agree with you on Manningham’s brain. He slipped in the draft because he was lying in his interviews (I don’t remember what he lied about). Dumb. He was still sitting there in the 3rd round and the Giants jumped on him. But the talent is definitely there.

Personally, my favorite FA WR is Colston, although my concern would be less about his knees and more about how good he might be with a QB not named Drew Brees throwing to him.
