The 49ers dropped back to pass on 69% of their opening drive play calls this season

49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman likes to go to the air on opening drives.

When you think of the 49ers offense, what do you think of?  Personally, I think Frank Gore.  I think ball control.  I think ground and pound, and play good defense.  That’s why I was surprised in Week 10 against the Giants they came out throwing the ball all over the field.  Just out of curiosity, I went back and looked at the Niners’ play calling on their first drives over the entire season and found that the Giants game was far from an anomaly:

Week Opponent Run Pass Result
1 Seahawks 2 1 Punt
2 Cowboys 1 5 Punt
3 Bengals 0 4 Punt
4 Eagles 2 5 Missed FG
5 Buccaneers 1 3 TD
6 Lions 0 1 Sack/Fumble
8 Browns 3 2 TD
9 Redskins 3 3 Punt
10 Giants 2 9 FG
11 Cardinals 3 6 Blocked FG
12 Ravens 0 3 Punt
13 Rams 1 4 Punt
14 Cardinals 2 3 Punt
15 Steelers 7 9 FG
16 Seahawks 2 8 Missed FG
17 Rams 4 5 Missed FG
Div Saints 2 6 Punt

On opening drives this season, the 49ers dropped back to pass on 69% of their play calls. If they come out throwing on Sunday, it shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Also noteworthy: David Akers had a fantastic season, but on opening drives, he was 2 for 6 on FG attempts.

I kinda hope that this entire season was a setup to confuse everybody. That they would pass a lot when nobody expected them to, so that they could then get to the NFCCG and just run it down the throats of whatever unfortunate team happened to be playing against them. The Giants will be going into this weekend thinking “Hey, it doesn’t matter that we suck at Run-D because the 49ers have become a passing team”

And then we get to look at Eli on the bench for 50 minutes of the game as the 9ers rack up the ToP and cruise to a 28-0 win.
