NFC East defenses are killing QBs

I received a tip from a reader (Thanks, Peter) that all 4 NFC East teams are in the Top 7 in the league in sacks.  If you factor in that the Lions and Vikings have not yet had their bye week, it can be said that all 4 NFC East teams are in the TOP FIVE in sacks per game.

Rank Team Sacks Sacks/game On pace for…
1 Giants 26 3.7 59
2 Ravens 25 3.6 57
3 Redskins 23 3.3 53
4 Eagles 22 3.1 50
T-5 Cowboys 21 3 48
T-5 Lions 24 3 48
T-5 Vikings 24 3 48
T-5 49ers 21 3 48

DeMarcus Ware has 12 sacks on his own already.  He has at least as many sacks as the Chiefs, Buccaneers, and Colts, a team with Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis.  And the crazy thing is… He doesn’t even lead the league.  Jared Allen does with 12.5, although Allen has played one more game.  Here are all the NFC East players with at least 4 sacks:

Player Team Sacks On pace for…
DeMarcus Ware Cowboys 12 27
Jason Babin Eagles 9 21
Jason Pierre-Paul Giants 8.5 19
Osi Umenyiora Giants 6 14
Cullen Jenkins Eagles 5 11
Brian Orakpo Redskins 4.5 10
Adam Carriker Redskins 4.5 10
Trent Cole Eagles 4 9

I kill Osi Umenyiora quite a bit on this blog, but hey, credit where credit is due… Considering he has only played 4 games so far, those 6 sacks are pretty impressive.  Of the Derrick Morgan / Brandon Graham / Jason Pierre-Paul trio, I don’t think there’s any debate anymore who got the best player there.  And Jason Babin – Anyone poo pooing that signing by the Eagles anymore?

For the record, Michael Strahan’s sack record is 22.5.  The all time sack record is held by Bruce Smith, with 200.  Ware, as you can see, is on pace for 27 this season, and he has 92 for his career (29 years old).  I think he has a real shot at catching Strahan this year, and in case you didn’t know, the Cowboys play the Giants Week 17.  He has no shot at Bruce Smith though.

  16. Also a thing to mention is that an online business administration training is designed for students to be able to without problems proceed to bachelor degree education. The 90 credit college degree meets the lower bachelor diploma requirements then when you earn your current associate of arts in BA online, you’ll have access to the modern technologies within this field. Several reasons why students are able to get their associate degree in business is because they are interested in this area and want to get the general training necessary before jumping in to a bachelor diploma program. Thx for the tips you actually provide in your blog.

The Giants pass rush might be hurting their run D.

They are 28th vs the run. They allow 4.7 ypc. They’ve given up 9 rushing TDs, 3rd most in the NFL. Reggie Bush had his first 100 yard game since 2006 against them on Sunday. Osi thinks run defense is an option. Not so sure about the others.

  20. Anders says:

The debate between Graham and JPP isnt settled yet as Graham have lost the whole year so far with that knee injury and they have only played 1½ year so far.
JPP might end up as the more productive pass rusher, where Graham could turn out to be the more well rounded DE, but it depends on how Graham recover.

    1. BBI says:

Perhaps, though its an uphill climb for Brandon Graham. JPP is actually pretty good at run defense. Actually graded out better last season than Graham did at run defense, while Graham last year was a better pass rusher.

This year though, I believe JPP has (I think) 26 pressures in 7 games, with 8.5 sacks…so definitely upped his game in terms of pass rushing as well.

      1. Anders says:

Yea its an uphill battle for Graham.
When you say JPP is pretty good a run defense, do you mean Tuck/Cole good or just better then Osi?
I will admit that I thought JPP would be a bust in the Gholston style, but gotta give the Giants credit, they know how to draft DEs.

        1. peterhad says:

I wouldnt say he is on that level yet, but he will definitely get there I think.

        2. BBI says:

You weren’t the only one to think he would bust, mate. I had ZERO confidence that he would amount to anything, but hey, I’m glad I was wrong.

JPP is definitely better than Osi. Not as good as Tuck/Cole, who, along with Julius Peppers are probably the three best run defending DEs in the league.

I’d say if you take all the starting 4-3 DEs, he’d be above average, but not the creme de la creme

          1. Anders says:

I wish the Eagles could draft DEs aswell as the Giants, but im happy that we got Babin this season as he have proved that last year was no fluke 🙂

            1. BBI says:

I wish the Giants had the Eagles’ negotiational skills. No team has as many cap-friendly deals as the Eagles have. I’m cool with Jerry Reese, though, so tis all good.

              1. Anders says:

Never had the feeling that the Giants had cap problems like the Cowboys or Redskins.

      2. Number5 says:

Yes so far JPP is ahead…but lets give it a little more time 😛

  21. Anthony says:

Trent Cole is actually on pace for 11 sacks because he missed those two games from injury.

  22. Euler.is.a.pimp says:

Do you have data for sacks by the DLine? That would be interesting to see too.

    1. BBI says:

I know that the Eagles have all of their sacks by the DL. Giants have all but 1.5 coming from the DL.

As far as Cows and Skins…do you consider their OLBs “DL”?

      1. Euler.is.a.pimp says:

I was only talking about 4-3 teams really.

    2. The Eagles DL has 0.5 more than the Giants if we’re only talking about D Lines. Every single one of the Eagles’ sacks are by the D Line:

      Babin – 9
      Jenkins – 5
      Cole – 4
      Tapp – 2
      Patterson – 1
      Laws – 1

Kiwanuka (SLB) has 3.5 and Deon Grant has 1, which would bring their DL total below Philly. Meanwhile, the ravens and Redskins both run 3-4 defenses, so it’s not an apples-apples comparison.

      1. BBI says:

Kiwanuka was playing on the DL for 2 of those sacks. 1 from Seattle and 1 from Buffalo at DE. The 1.5 against Miami was at SLB.

I forgot about Grant, so I made a mistake up there. Take away 2.5, so that makes it 23.5 from the DL.

Of course, this matters not at all.

      2. Euler.is.a.pimp says:

Knew about the Eagles. Good to know about the Giants. Thanks.
