John Beck will start for the Redskins at QB this week

ESPN’s Adam Schefter with the breaking news below via twitter. This should come as no surprise to anyone that watched the Redskins-Eagles game last week. In case you missed it, I did a throw-by-throw analysis of John Beck’s game in relief of Rex Grossman against Philly, with video. Beck was up and down, but had his moments. Obviously, he was far better than Rex.

I’m not sure there’s really much else to say here. I know some people out there were saying that Rex deserved one more week, but I didn’t hear much in the way of compelling arguments as to why. This move is kind of a no-brainer, in my opinion. Give the kid (er, uh, 30 year old) a shot. Can’t be any worse, right?

Washington's John Beck will start at quarterback Sunday versus Carolina.

Wow, today I learned John Beck is 30 freaking years old. I don’t know why, but I always thought he was a mid round draft pick out of a small school drafted ~2-4 years ago and has always been a back-up/reserve.

    1. He was drafted out of BYU the same year as Kolb, and yes, has always been a backup/reserve. He’s just older.

  6. Tracer Bullet says:

If the Eagles’ brain is getting rightly excoriated for failing to establish a credible Plan B if Matthews and Watkins couldn’t step in as starters, Redskins fans should be read to flay the Shanahans alive for thinking Beck or Grossman were/are legitimate NFL QBs.

    1. Well, in fairness to the Shannies, I think their situation was a little different than the Eagles. The Redskins were never going to be serious title contenders with the QBs that were out there, which is different than the Eagles’ situation. In the draft, the Skins were sitting there at 10 and had a shot at either Gabbert and Ponder. Obviously they passed. Guess they didn’t like what they saw. I can’t kill them for not bringing in some mediocre QB like Orton or VY. They recognized what they were as a team and played their hand accordingly.

Now… if they don’t address the QB situation in a major way THIS offseason, flame away.

Why are the Panthers a favorite in this game?
