Reuben Frank: Brian Rolle is the Eagles’ new starting WLB

Brian Rolle is your new starting weak-side LB

He of course replaces the much-maligned Casey Matthews. This should come as no surprise to anybody – rolle has played well in his limited opportunities, while Matthews… hasn’t.

It also appears that Nate Allen will be starting. He’ll replace Kurt Coleman, in a mild surprise. I would have guessed Jarrad Page, but it doesn’t really matter I suppose, as the Eagles don’t have a safety on their roster at all that has played well so far this season.

While Matthews hasn’t played well, he was put in a nearly impossible position as a rookie behind the Wide 9 with a shortened offseason. He’s never had the chance to just focus on doing the fundamentals well as he adapts to the speed of the NFL. Is he good enough at getting off blocks to play SAM well?

Glad Rolle is getting a shot, he covered Hynoski well, can disengage from bigger guys (highlight of the year against the Rams), and could really make the position his own. How did Chaney look back at MLB? Has Akeem Jordan got skills more suited to playing behind the Wide 9 at either Mike or SAM?

I honestly would have preferred Matthews unseating fokou on top of the rolle promotion, but I guess you can’t have everything…

Jimmy can you explain the absence of Jaiquawn Jarrett? I mean, I don’t want to go all Roob in this post but how bad did he look in preseason practice? Moving Page to free safety and Jarrett to strong keeps Coleman off the field and keeps stress off Allen’s knee. Is there any rational behind not playing him?

You’re right we haven’t had a safety play good this year but I would of been surprised if it was Page & not Coleman, Page has done some things well, I don’t know if we can say the same thing about Coleman

I have been waiting for this. Rolle is a beast.
