Cowboys should think about getting what they can for Tashard Choice

A couple months ago, I wrote that Tashard Choice probably isn’t going to be a Dallas Cowboy anymore after the 2011 season, as this is the final year of his rookie contract, and it appears Jason Garrett doesn’t trust him. Nursing a calf injury, Choice has yet to play in the preseason, while Felix Jones has excelled, and a couple of hungry wannabe Cowboys in Lonyae Miller and Phillip Tanner have had their moments. Add in that rookie DeMarco Murray, who has also yet to play, is a mortal lock to make the team.

The issue is that the NFL isn’t hurting for good running backs these days.  In fact, they’re sort of a dime-a-dozen.  Look at some of the 2s around the league at the RB position:

Team 2nd RB Team 2nd RB Team 2nd RB
Bears Chester Taylor Falcons Jason Snelling Raiders Michael Bush
Bengals Bernard Scott Giants Brandon Jacobs Rams Cadillac Williams
Bills C.J. Spiller Jaguars Rashad Jennings Ravens Ricky Williams
Broncos Willis McGahee Jets LaDainian Tomlinson Redskins Ryan Torain
Browns Montarrio Hardesty Lions Jerome Harrison Saints Mark Ingram
Chargers Mike Tolbert Niners Kendall Hunter Seahawks Justin Forsett
Chiefs Thomas Jones Packers James Starks Texans Ben Tate
Colts Donald Brown Panthers Jonathan Stewart Titans Javon Ringer
Eagles Ronnie Brown Patriots Stevan Ridley Vikings Toby Gerhart

Choice would likely not be anything more than a 3rd RB on any of the above teams this late into camp.  There are, however, 4 teams (other than the Cowboys) not listed above, that might make some sense: The Cardinals, Dolphins, Steelers, and Buccaneers.

(Cont. after the jump)…

– The Cardinals just traded Tim Hightower to the Redskins, and then promptly lost rookie 2nd round pick Ryan Williams to a season-ending injury.  They’re left only with Beanie Wells and return specialist LaRod Stephens-Howling.

– The Dolphins lost Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams to free agency, and traded for Reggie Bush.  They can’t possibly view Reggie Bush as a primary back, can they?  Perhaps rookie Daniel Thomas will be the mail carrier, but it couldn’t hurt to give Choice a look, and obviously, the Dolphins have a history of bringing in ex-Cowboys.

– The Steelers surprisingly don’t have a ton of depth at RB.  They like Isaac Redman as their 2, but Mewelde Moore is aging and fading.  Choice brings a similar skill set to the table as Moore.

– The Bucs have the power guy in LaGarrett Blount, and another RB/FB tweener power guy in Earnest Graham.  A guy like Choice could bring some versatility to an improving team.

If I’m Jerry Jones and one of those above teams came at me with an offer of a 5th round pick, I don’t think I’d hesitate for a second… and I think I’d strongly consider a 6th.
